The Exclusivity of a Pocket Pair

Peeling with middle pair vs. mid pocket pair. Small and mid pocket pairs are tough poker online hands to play. Everyone loves to flop a set. It’s a well disguised gem that often gets paid off. But when you think back to all of the pocket pairs you were dealt in your last poker online tournament, how many of them turned into sets for you? What’s even more discouraging is that if you’re looking to get a set with a small pocket pair, you usually only have the flop to do this. If you don’t flop a set more often than not you’re letting go and won’t see the turn or river. If you do have a middle pocket pair and someone makes a bet small enough that you can call to see another card, what are you hoping for? Aside from your 2 outs to improve to a set, no card is actually going to make you feel better about your poker hand, not even a deuce. So, what is the point of calling that bet on the flop if not to turn your hand into a bluff by floating. Contrarily, if you hold middle pair on the flop with a random hand, you have more outs to improve on the turn. Even if your pair is smaller than a middle pocket pair, you have more chances to improve to a hand that can beat one pair. You go from 2 outs to 5 outs (adding three from your kicker card). If you add backdoor straight or flush draws with a suited connector, your equity starts to build up. So, if you’re looking to peel off a card with an unsure low pair, maybe next time you should think about dropping that pocket pair and holding that connector.
